The Economics and Business Studies Department's primary aim is to stretch students academically, seeking to develop better thinking skills and prepare students for the next stage in their lives. We also encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning and so bridge the gap between school and Higher Education.

The Department follows three separate A Level courses in Economics, Business Studies and Accounting and a single GCSE course in Business and Economics. None of the courses are intended to be vocational but aim to develop knowledge and academic skills. However, the Business Studies A Level has moved significantly towards a more entrepreneurial approach in recent years and now provides a good basis in the skills required to set up and run your own business.

Learning and teaching methods are varied, but ultimately geared towards examination success. All students are encouraged to read widely, including journals and newspapers. We also hold a well-stocked department library for students wishing to develop knowledge beyond the confines of the syllabus. A structured reading programme from this library is provided for students seeking entry to the top British universities, incorporating many of the recommended texts for Oxbridge entrance interviews. This reading is supported by a series of one-to-one sessions as interviews approach.

Students go on several trips during the year to see the world of Economics and Business in action, including manufacturing plants, the Bank of England, the London Stock Exchange and Thorpe Park Theme Park. These trips form an important role in developing a keener understanding of the real business world away from the College. In addition, modern technology and bang up-to-date resources are used as widely as possible to bring the real world into the classroom.

We also have a number of local entrepreneurs and businesspeople who come in for informal Q and A sessions during lunchtimes. These sessions are designed to get the students closer to the front line of business and provide them with an opportunity to get to grips with business issues that really matter to business people.
