The ESOL Department provides courses in English for Speakers of other Languages. These  courses cater for non- native students who are studying English in the Development Year programme and for those following mainstream curriculum studies between Years 9 and 13.

(For  more information about the Development Year please refer to the separate web page)

The aims of the ESOL syllabi are twofold:
    •    To prepare pupils for mainstream study or to support them throughout their mainstream GCSE, A/S and A level studies by raising their level of competency in English and study skills.
    •    To prepare pupils for internationally recognised ESOL qualifications, which can enable them to continue on to Higher Education and also greatly enhance prospects for future employment.

As well as General English classes, the range of external examinations courses currently offered are listed below:
    •    IELTS
    •    Cambridge ESOL exams e.g. KET/PET/FCE/CAE/CPE
    •    Trinity speaking examinations
    •    IGCSE English as a Second Language
    •    IGCSE First Language English (for near native speakers).

Preparation for other examinations such TOEFL/TOEIC can also be arranged and extra tuition can be provided on demand.

ESOL classes are undertaken in modern facilities with IWB and ICT access. The department possesses a wide range of resources to ensure lessons are stimulating and varied, and the courses studied are regularly reviewed to reflect the latest approaches in ESOL methodology. All ESOL staff are trained at least to R.S.A Diploma level and hold a great deal of experience between them.
