Wycliffe Big Boats Head

On Saturday 6th February, Wycliffe hosted the 4.5km ‘Big Boats Head’ run by the Wycliffe Watermen. The event was well attended and represented crews of fours, quads and eight. It attracted top clubs including the Royal Shrewsbury School, St Edward’s, Radley College, King’s Worcester, Cheltenham College and the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club.

The Royal Shrewsbury posted the quickest time of the day with their J18 eight with a time of 15:04.3. Oxford University Women’s Boat Club were the only crew to break a record on the day with a time of 17:02.8

Wycliffe continued to show signs of improvement with the J16 quad of David Zan-Kreyser, Nathan Devaux-Davey, Robert Camm and Matthew Crouch winning the IM3 quad event by 58 seconds. Captain, Carl Straube, hoped for a repeat performance when he raced with Matthew in the second division but Cheltenham College proved too powerful and the crew came 2nd, only 13 seconds behind Cheltenham; proving two solid performances for these boys considering they rowed over 25km and raced 9km in one day.

The J18 ‘b’ quad with Alistair Johnson, Ben Moule, Harry Jenkins and Thomas Shephard had a solid row despite having very little time in the boat together, as Harry Jenkins (Yr10) was a late replacement. These lads finished 7th in their category.

The J15 coxed quad of Karl Gillings, Miles Littlewood, Ciaran Povey, Thomas Vaughton and coxed by Thomas Allen, showed their continued and rapid improvement to come 3rd from eight. The winners were the national finalists, Evesham, and results show that the Wycliffe crew has halved the gap between the crews over the past six months.

The Women’s Novice quad of Beth Grundy, Hannah Sigston, Rosie Grindrod and steered by Emily Walker-Smith had no opposition from Cheltenham College as they were scratched from the event. The girls completed the course in 21:04.1, and this was one of their best ever rows. The first three girls mentioned are in Year 10 and comparable times with their peers would have put them in the top three.

The Boat Club has several events coming up in the near future including the Avon County, Saltford event on March 6th and the National Junior Sculling Head at the 2012 Olympic Rowing venue on March 12th. Supporters are always welcome.
