On Thursday 25th April, a well-attended yet intimate audience gathered in the school atrium to hear extracts of creative writing across the year groups.

Raffle draws have never brought any luck for me, so when I was told about the news that I had been drawn to swap with Mrs. Burnet Ward as Head for a day, I was pretty excited. As a student, there’s always unanswered questions, presumptions and stereotypes about the Head’s job so I was intrigued to find out the truth about them.

Tristan Smith OW this week flew to California, looking to pursue a career in commercial fitness modelling and coaching. Tristan has been training since he entered Sixth Form almost six years ago and still remembers his time at Wycliffe fondly.

Over the Easter holidays a team of eight staff and students, from Wycliffe College CCF, went on an arduous cross-country skiing expedition to the Hardangervidda mountain range in Norway. The aim of the venture was to introduce a fairly novice group of cadets to cross-country skiing in what is classed as one of the great wilderness areas of Northern Europe.

Friday 3rd May 2013 4.00pm - 6.00pm Six members of art staff from Wycliffe College display their work as part of the Stroud Valleys Open Studios Festival over two weekends 11th & 12th May, 18th & 19th May.

A Wycliffe student has taken a gold medal at a Chemistry Olympiad, and did it a year early! Two other Wycliffe students won Bronze medals.

The latter half of the Spring Term saw the belated start of Wycliffe’s Model United Nations season.

Wycliffe’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) jumped at the opportunity of taking part in a new and exciting Government sponsored enterprise.

This Thursday saw the Wycliffe College Pi Recitation Contest take place in honour of Pi Day. Pi Day is observed on March 14 (or 3/14 in the American month/day date format), since 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form.

On a bitterly cold day in March, eight cadets travelled to Insworth to compete in the Springs Skills Competition. Previously this had been a purely shooting based activity, however this year it was altered to include a range of activities.

To raise money for Comic Relief, the prefects felt they would like to contribute and organise an event together as a team. The idea of a Dodgeball Tournament was an instant hit, as it would hopefully raise a lot of money as well as being a bit of fun for all who took part.

Monday 11th March, marked the second anniversary of the North East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

On Thursday 14th March, the U14 Hockey squad travelled to Deer Park in Cirencester to play the District Schools’ Hockey Tournament.

An auction of prefect and teacher ‘slaves’ at Wycliffe College this morning raised over £200 towards the school’s Comic Relief fund. Pupils – and some other teachers - bid up to £40 for the right to have the volunteer servants for a day of service next week. Now the ‘slaves’ will be put to use preparing drinks, collecting meals, cleaning study spaces, polishing shoes and opening doors for the winning bidders.

Year 12 pupils Charlotte Ansell and Flick Williams presented their “Illuminite” car safety product at the Young Enterprise Trade Exhibiton, to judges and the public in the Cheltenham Town Hall.

On Monday 11th February, Wycliffe College began a ‘Comic Relief Week’, starting with a large baking competition between houses.

The event will be taking place in School House from 18/03 to 22/03, when pupils and staff will have the opportunity to have their pictures done. This will largely be done over Easter, with pictures taken during this week. It will be £10 for a digital print and £15 for a painting.

On Thursday 7th March, two teams of Wycliffe’s best Year 10 mathematicians represented the school at a regional round of the ‘Further Maths Network’ Year 10 Team maths competition.

A great morning was enjoyed with A M Crawford celebrating World Book Day.  

On Saturday 23rd February, a group of the boys from Haywardsfield boarding house spent the day packing bags at Tesco in Stroud in an effort to raise money for the Meningitis Trust.

Wycliffe's Language Department presented its annual "English is not enough" event for Year 9, who this year, were joined by students from Katherine Lady Berkeley and Stroud High Schools.

Wycliffe Pray for Japan (Fundraising for Japanese Tsunami Orphans) raised £380.50 from the Krispy Kreme doughnuts sale, the guess the teacher competition and the Christmas card sale at Stonehouse Goodwill Fest. Thank you so much to all who were involved.

The PSAT, SAT and ACT testing systems are rarely permitted outside the USA and very few places in the UK are authorised to run them. With increasing numbers wishing to apply for US universities, the school decided it was time to put Wycliffe among the elite.

Professor Paul Curzon, formerly Director of Studies for Computer Science at Sidney Sussex, College, Cambridge, currently working in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, at Queen Mary, University of London, came into college to speak to Y9s about the magic of Computer Science.

Last September saw the launch of the Wycliffe Cryptology Club, an enrichment activity for pupils interested in code breaking.  The pupils study cipher systems and try and decrypt messages using various techniques such as frequency analysis of letters and symbols, intuition, and use of computer programmes.   Additionally, the club entered a team ̶ ‘Wycliffe Code Breakers’ ̶ in the annual National Cipher Challenge.  

Welcome to the Chartwell’s Spring Term Newsletter. I would like to share with you activities that took place during the Autumn Term and ones we have planned for the new term. We hope to ensure that your son or daughter finds the dining experience both fun and pleasurable, as well as encouraging them to eat healthily.

Wycliffe was proud to remain open today – in spite of the weather. A level exams went ahead, pupils used online learning services to access lessons if they could not get to school and some staff even skied in to get in.

As part of the on-going redevelopment of the Science School, Biology Lab 3 was refurbished over the summer.

On Tuesday, 4th of December, I had a chance to attend a Computing at Schools Conference: “Inventing the Future”, in Oxford.

Wycliffe hosted some of the country’s top head teachers this week as they converged on the school for a lesson of their own.

On Thursday 22nd November, Wycliffe and three other schools took part in the first rounds on the nation-wide English Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace competition.

This landmark mural project commissioned and made possible through funding provided by the Parents’ Association has been designed to create a focal point at the student entrance to School House, bringing together many aspects of Wycliffe life.

On Tuesday 13th November, Wycliffe College, Stonehouse hosted a ‘Ready Steady Cook’ styled evening led by Darren Tinkler, Development Chef from Chartwells.

In conjunction with our partner school in Chicago, North Shore Country Day School, a music group from Wycliffe had an amazingly successful tour over the half-term break.

This event was held in our Sports Centre.  Sadly, due to the date of the half term, a number of our pupils were unavailable to compete this year. Despite a slightly lower field of entrants, Wycliffe were well represented. Pupils from both the Prep and Senior School were joined by their Junior Club teammates.

Wycliffe staff and pupils support Movember UK in their month long campaign to raise awareness of men’s health.

It is not difficult to dream of being back in Sorrento while we are experiencing this cold and wet British weather.

Wycliffe's U14s netball squad played in the Gloucestershire Schools' Netball Tournament on Monday 12th November.

Wycliffe Debating has seen resurgence in recent years, due in part to a number of new inter-school competitions, the likes of which we have not entered in recent memory. One such competition is organised by Gloucester-based solicitors Davies and Partners. This competition sees pairs of pupils from Gloucestershire schools engage in relevant topics that effect our country or the world as a whole in a series of quick-fire debates.

Artist Laurie Plant has realised a large landmark mural situated on the imposing wall in the pupil entrance to School House. This project has involved collaboration with pupils at Wycliffe through workshops and a residency programme. This work is complemented by an exhibition of working drawings and photographs on display in the Atrium gallery.

Wycliffe Geograhpy Department travelled to Sorrento in the October half term.

Wycliffe, with the help of the Parents Association (PASS), has commissioned a landmark mural that will be painted on the large wall by the pupils’ entrance to School House.

Wycliffe College had a double win in the National Schools Section of the Calmseden Horse Trials on 7th October.

On Friday 5th October, a group of 35 Development Year pupils accompanied by four members of staff went on a trip to Oxford.

Monday 1st October, saw Wycliffe College host lectures from Tim Harrison of Bristol University and John Kilcoyne from the University of Sunderland (more famously known as ‘the man in the shed’ from Sky1’s Brainiac TV show) on the benefits of fossil fuels, thermodynamics, beetles and the fun in science.

On Saturday 18th August Mr Garrow, Tom James and I, travelled all the way up to Hexham in Northumberland for the Matt Wells Jubilee Sprint Regatta 2012. This was a one-off event for the retirement of Matt Wells, an Olympic bronze medallist from Beijing and the stroke of the GB Quad Scull at London 2012 who finished 5th in the final.

Over the summer holidays, I was lucky enough to be chosen to go on a 6 week leadership and challenge course in the Rocky Mountains.

Wycliffe’s sparkling summer has continued today with the publication of GCSE results. No fewer than sixteen students at the non-selective Stonehouse school achieved seven or more A and A*s. The overall pass rate of 100% included a record-breaking 38% at A* and A.

Wycliffe’s A level students have recorded their best ever set of results with a third of all grades being A* and As in a year in which A grades were harder to achieve in light of pressure from exams watchdog Ofqual.

Lisa Gomez, Head of Spanish at Wycliffe College is a volunteer Language Services Team Member for Basketball at the Olympics.

The academic transition day for the new Year 9 pupils who will be joining us this September is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to meet a number of teachers and sample the range of subjects they will taking in the new academic Year.

On the 28th June 2012, Collingwood House celebrated the approaching end of the Summer Term, and for many their final days at Wycliffe, with a summer party.

A Year 9 team represented Wycliffe at the 2012 Intelligent Innovators inter-school competition held at GCHQ on June 22nd 2012.

On Sunday 1st July, Wycliffe hosted the Alex Gidman Benefit Six-a-side Tournament, in what turned out to be a perfect day for cricket.

On the 26th June, a team of 26 Prefects and Heads of Houses underwent a full day of training, in preparation for their forthcoming academic year as the student leaders at Wycliffe College.

Thursday 28th June saw the first ever Year 12 Music Bonanza in the Chapel.

All pupils will have the opportunity to sample different activities that will form part of the London Olympics 2012.

Wycliffe pupils, Omar Shah Hakim and Winnie Fan participated in The Nihongo Cup (National Japanese Speech Contest) in June, at the Japanese Embassy in London.

One of the most rewarding parts of Science is finding out about all of the brilliant and far-reaching work that is going on around the world.

Friday 11th May saw the return of Wycliffes Inter-House Public Speaking Competition.

Over the weekend a team of Year 10 Cadets took part in the arduous Ten Tors Challenge.

On Friday 27th April the Performing Arts Centre at the Prep School hosted a very special concert in which the musicians of both the Senior and Prep schools performed as one.

In support of the Great Crane Project, Wycliffe is delighted to have sponsored an egg and is eagerly awaiting the hatching, which is due to happen later this month.

Each year, the submissions for this anthology never cease to astound me. The wealth of talent that we have here at Wycliffe is obvious and it is clear to me that the standard of writing improves year by year.

Wycliffe was delighted to be the launch venue for the Festival of Manufacturing and Engineering.

On Saturday 16th March, a group of the boys from Haywardsfield boarding house spent the day packing bags at Tesco in Stroud in an effort to raise money for the Meningitis Trust, which is the houses chosen charity.

Since the 20th January, Wycliffe has been hosting its own Inter-House Debating Competition. Thirty one participants made up various pairs from each of the boarding houses have been competing every Friday in twelve heats, overseen by eight different judges, all for two pieces of silverware.

Mrs Hodgkins, Senior School Librarian, has been chosen to be one of the teacher/librarian judges for the Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show 500 WORDS competition.

Wycliffe attended the Area Trade Fair for Young Enterprise at Cheltenham Town Hall on Thursday 8th March.

On Sunday 12th February, Mr Jenkins, Ms Phelps along with pupils, Alex Gilchrist, Kieran Powell and Josie Randall travelled to Schwabisch Gmund in Germany.

This year cookery club have been supporting the 2012 Olympics by cooking a variety of dishes from around the world.

Today marked the launch of Wycliffes Robofest 2012, with Senior and Prep School pupils taking part in various workshops.

The UK Mathematics Trust is inviting students to attend a trial of a new enrichment event for around fifty able young mathematicians the UKMT Mathematical Circle.

The girls of Haywardsend, with the help of Miss Howard, Miss Sherwood and Chartwells Duty Chef Doreen Johnson, raised money for their chosen charity, The Shrubberies School by hosting a pancake sale on Shrove Tuesday.

Japanese teacher Mrs Suzui, with the help of a dedicated team of pupils, managed to raise an amazing 600 for the IWATE Japanese Tsunami Orphans Fund from the sale of 3,000 Wycliffe Pray for Japan, Christmas cards.

Wycliffes chapel held a charity auction, Bid for a Butler in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Brick-making, candle-making and watching 19th century foundry workers making iron tools, were just some of the activities undertaken by Year 9 pupils on a visit to Blists Hill Industrial Village and Museum, on Wednesday 25th January.

Alex Gidmans benefit committee is delighted to announce the dates of his two benefit year launch events, a fabulous evening in Bristol with two sporting greats, a 2005 Ashes winner and 2003 Rugby World Cup winner and an intimate evening at the Old Brewery in Greenwich, London for beer and cricket lovers hosted by Angus Fraser and Roger Dakin.

Wycliffes rugby stars have won through to the regional final of the Daily Mail Vase, which will be played tonight at Stroud RFC.

On Friday 20th January, as part of our Business and Enterprise Day, Wycliffe Year 9 had an opportunity to develop a valuable range of skills working in small teams led by leaders from local businesses.

The Education Secretarys statement criticising the teaching of ICT in schools has shown once again how Wycliffe College is ahead of the game.

On Wednesday 11th January, the Modern Foreign Languages Department put on "English is not enough" - a morning of activities and talks to show Year 9 the importance of languages in the workplace.

On Wednesday 21st September Year 9 and staff, descended upon the Miserden Estate in Gloucestershire for the annual Miserden field activities trip.

On Tuesday 20th September, the ‘Wycliffe Pray for Japan’ Fund raising team organised a ‘Bag2School’ collection to raise money for the education and welfare of 92 children orphaned by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Stroud Fire Station kindly hosted a visit for a group of GCSE Applied scientists. They experienced at firsthand what it is like trying to rescue people trapped in a smoke filled room using thermal imaging cameras.

Two talented Year 9 pupils, Georgie Chillingworth and Lara Bathurst have spent the 2010-11 netball-training season in the company of the cream of the county’s talent while receiving coaching sessions at the Gloucestershire Satellite Netball Academy, at the Oxtalls Campus in Cheltenham.

As part of the preparation process for the newly appointed Year 12 prefects and the head of Houses, twenty-two pupils and their Sixth Form tutors took part in a team building session at the Head 4 Heights Aerial Adventure Centre in South Cerney.

Music for a summer evening featuring the wind players of Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra

Like a black cloud flying silently across the tennis courts, a swarm of bees arrived at Wycliffe on Tuesday afternoon.

When the Wycliffe 1st team clashed with the OWs on the 7th May, the close loss last year was very much on our minds.

Wycliffe string players benefitted from the professional touch when they were visited by the world famous Carducci String Quartet at the Prep School Studio Theatre on Tuesday 14th June.

Wycliffe College Boat Club was both delighted and privileged to host Olympic Rowing coach Bill Barry for a training session involving our senior boys quad.

On Thursday 9th June, a group of Year 10 pupils visited two local farms.

Following on from the news story on 8th February 2011, Sixth Form students, Tom, Charles and Mathew are pictured presenting a cheque to a representative of Fly2help charity for the value of £1,000.

On Wednesday 25th May, the children and staff at Wycliffe Preparatory School were interrupted from their normal morning lessons when the Head, Adrian Palmer, asked the children to gather near the school playing fields as a surprise visitor would be arriving by helicopter at 11am!

What started out as an idea between two school friends on a Model United Nations trip has evolved into a massively complex web adventure.

40 Wycliffe students attended a ten-day trip to Spain as part of a Spanish Cultural and Immersion Programme.

Despite busily preparing for a summer of examinations, Wycliffe College students took time out to celebrate Kate & William’s tying of the marital knot.

Wycliffe Squash players made history in the National School’s Competition by winning both the boys under 15 and boys under 19 titles, a feat which no other school has ever done in the 70 year history of the competition.

Year 12 pupil, Gwilym Wyn-Jones was presented with a Royal Marines recruit beret and belt in School Assembly by Captain Moore of the Royal Marines.

Earlier this term, the pupils, parents and staff of Wycliffe contributed to a collection of old and unused sports kit as part of an RAF appeal called 'Taking Football to Africa and Beyond'.

The chance to take part in a debate in the famous Senedd in Cardiff was eagerly seized upon by Wycliffe students on a recent visit to the Welsh Assembly, on the same day that the US Ambassador rolled into town.

The chick was the only one of three to hatch on Thursday 10th March in the Biology Department.

On Saturday March 5th, a good proportion of the Boat Club competed at the Avon County Head of the River situated on the Avon near Bath.

For Wycliffe's second trip to Kingswood's MUN Conference, we were given Madagascar and Turkey to represent.

In March, some of the Sixth Form Politics students were lucky enough to obtain tickets to see Prime Minister’s Question Time in the House of Commons.

On Sunday 20th February, a small squad of nine Wycliffe pupils competed at the 3.5km City of Bristol Head Race.

Subash Ale, Year 9 was chosen as the winner of the 2010 Wycliffe Poetry Competition with his poem ‘Home Sweet Home’.

On Saturday 16th October, Wycliffe took a small squad to compete in the annual Pairs Head, raced by 479 crews from Chiswick Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge on the River Thames.

The aim of Exercise Alpine Challenge 5 was to introduce a number of fairly inexperienced cadets to Alpine Climbing, with a view to tackling three of the highest and most interesting peaks in the Austrian Otztaler.

Year 12 pupils, Tom Shephard, Matthew Crouch, David Zan-Kreyser and Vladimir Lavrischev, undertook their Gold level practice Duke of Edinburgh expedition by canoe on Friday 24th September.

Pupils and staff experienced a culinary journey when on Wednesday 10th November Chartwell’s Executive Chef, Andrew Walker and Wycliffe’s Head Chef, Di Hoskins, transformed the usual dining experience to that of a bygone era.

Over the October half-term 29 Geography students and four staff managed to avoid volcanic ash and molten lava and spent five days exploring the geological wonders of Iceland.

Official figures released this week show that Wycliffe is now one of the top UK schools for GCSE and A level results.

Ollie Capehorn, former Wycliffe Sixth Form pupil represented the United Kingdom at the 15th Overseas High School Student Japanese Speech Contest in Japan in July 2010.

Wycliffe has said goodbye to one of its longest-serving member of staff, with the retirement of Head of Maths, Phil Hale after 30 years at the College. In a distinguished career, Phil not only led a busy department but ran two boarding houses between 1999 in 2008, was a keen and loyal member of the Jazz Band and led the staff golf team.

As part of the College’s five year rolling programme of refurbishment of the Science Department, the first of the refurbished science laboratories has been completed ready for the start of term.

On Wednesday 28th April, a contingent from the Wycliffe CCF welcomed The Venerable Stephen Robbins, Chaplain General Archdeacon for the British Army, for their Biennial Inspection.

On Thursday, 22nd April, Wycliffe held its third creative writing competition prize-giving to celebrate the launch of this year’s Wycliffe Creative Writing Anthology.

On April 6th, Wycliffe’s IT Department donated 61 fully equipped computers to the charity ‘IT Schools Africa’.

Wycliffe Debating team, made up of Tom Brown and Ollie Capehorn participated in the Three Counties Debating competition at Malvern College.

On Thursday 25th March, Wycliffe Boat Club took part in the Sport Relief 'Row a Mile’ dressed as characters from the film, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

Year 10 French, German and Spanish students were in for a surprise on Tuesday, 24th March.

Friday 11^th May saw the return of Wycliffe’s Inter-House Public Speaking Competition. The competition had not run during the 2010/11 school year, so there was a chance to update the format slightly. The event comprised of participants from each House giving a five minute presentation on a topic of their choosing. They were then subjected to a series of questions devised by a participant from another House. A third team member chaired the proceedings and kept things in line. The evening took place in Wycliffe’s Chapel, and was presided over by Mr. Ian Russell and guest judge Mr. Patrick Stayt (OW).

Despite only a small turnout, the quality of all entrants was high. The Speakers chose a myriad of topics, ranging from Time Travel to Fast Food, and from Civil Liberties to a trip to the Orthodontist. The Questioners had been able to research these topics in advance, but had not heard the speech in its entirety until the night, so had to think on their feet in order to adapt their prepared material to fit what they had just heard. The Chairpersons had the opportunity to be as concise or as imaginative as they thought necessary to introduce the other participants, to select questions, and to give a few words of thanks.

Prizes were awarded to the best participant in each of these three roles, and to an overall winning team. The Best Speaker on the night was Rachel Lade – Haywardsend, the Best Questioner was Krys Fishwick – Ward’s House, and the Best Chairperson was Jasper Meehan - Haywardsfield. Taking home the cup for the best overall team was Haywardsfield (also comprising of Questioner Fergus Menendez and Speaker Oliver Hawes). Well done to all who took part, and special congratulations to the winners.
