20 November 2007 - Vicky Brookes running London Marathon for Meningitis Trust

On 13th April 2008 Vicky Brookes (SH 1991-1995) will be attempting to run the 26.2 miles that is the London Marathon. She will be running in memory of a family friend, Adina Harper, who tragically lost her life very suddenly to meningitis aged only 14.  She was an only child and her family and friends have been absolutely devastated by her death. Vicky has chosen to run and raise funds for the Meningitis Trust www.meningitis-trust.org, a charity based in Stroud which helps families affected by meningitis, increases awareness of the disease and aids research into vaccines and treatments. She needs to raise a minimum of £1,500 but is hoping to raise much more. Wycliffe has been extremely supportive and has agreed to help both raise funds and increase awareness of the disease within the school so that pupils and their parents will be better informed and able to spot symptoms at the earliest possible stages. On Friday 15th February Wycliffe will be having a 'Meningitis Awareness Day' where information on the disease and symptoms will be available and each pupil will make a small contribution to wear non-uniform for the day.  The proceeds from the collection at the OW Carol Service on 8th December will also be going to the Trust.  Vicky will commence formal training in mid-December when she will be following a strict programme with a minimum of five days training per week, including a long run each weekend, building up to running 23 miles a few weeks before the day of the Marathon. She says “I am going to have my work cut out juggling training, fundraising and a new job, but if my efforts lead to one child receiving medical attention sooner than they may otherwise have done, then it will be worth while.” All donations will be very gratefully received so if you feel you can help, please visit her web page where you can donate securely on line at www.justgiving.com/vickybrookes.  Alternatively please contact Ginny Young in the OW Office on 01453 820439.5 November 2007 - 200 Club Second Draw Winners - click here

29 August 2007 - OW Bob Purvis makes TV Debut on 'Kitchen Criminals'!

Colonel Bob Purvis (SH 1948-1951) from Usk debuted on BBC2 on Thursday 16th August in the series 'Kitchen Criminals' on BBC2 at 6.30 pm and was seen again trying to cook on Monday & Tuesday 27th & 28th August.  Bob hopes he does not damage the image of his old school but this really is his 'Waterloo'.  The nearest that Bob has ever been to a kitchen was when his Housemaster – the late David Paine – appointed him as the Leader of the School House Washing up Team in 1950!  There are those who can cook and there are those who are so hopeless they barely know how to boil water. These are the people that top chefs Angela Hartnett and John Burton Race are to trying to teach to cook like Michelin star chefs.  He never learnt to cook, and at the audition Bob was found to be the worst male cook from Wales and the West Country.  Despite trying his best Angela has now 'booted' Bob out of the kitchen!

Bob has told us that he has absolutely no intention of becoming a professional cook!

Twenty Three OWs, many accompanied by their wives, gathered in the School House Atrium on 27th June 2007 to reminisce about their Wycliffe school days spent at Lampeter during the Second World War. A special guest was June Dixon and her husband Harold Everett. June, daughter of ‘Dicko’, Head of Music and Housemaster of Springfield and School House had unveiled the memorial plaque at St David’s College, Lampeter in 1998 when the previous reunion took place. There was a loud hubbub of voices and ‘I’m sorry, but I should know you shouldn’t I?’ questions as the years rolled back and friendships were renewed. Some had spent all their time at Lampeter and Stonehouse was a new experience. Others had started in Gloucestershire and finished in Wales or vice versa. Frank Smith welcomed the assembled party who were escorted to Wycliffe Hall for Lunch with the pupils and staff, many comments were heard on how much choice there is now.At 2.00 pm a group of sixth form pupils arrived to escort the visitors on a tour of the campus, showing them the wonderful facilities and learning about each other at the same time. Unfortunately the rain came as they all returned to Wycliffe Hall so the group photograph had to be taken inside. The Head, Margie Burnet Ward joined the party for tea and cakes and more stories of Wycliffe 60-plus years ago.
