The Spring 2008 Meeting of the Society was held at The Monmouthshire Golf Club, Abergavenny on Friday 23rd May 2008. This was a return visit to the The Monmouthshire and the course was in superb condition. The weather was balmy when play started, but the forecast rain, accompanied by thunder but fortunately no lightning, duly arrived. However, as would be expected of OWs, no-one was put off by the somewhat frightening but luckily short-lived conditions, and full rounds were completed and scores recorded. The rolls and coffee before playing and the meal afterwards were much appreciated by the twelve OWs and seven guests who took part.
Peter Woolley (Staff, Honorary OW) retained the John H Watts Trophy with a stableford score of 34 points, Peter Beynon (J S 1951-1959) was second with 33 points, Martin Greenshields (W 1966-1971) was third with 32 points, and Gill Miles (Staff, Honorary OW) was fourth with 29 points.

HISTORY OF THE OW GOLFING SOCIETY
The South Wales Old Wycliffian Golfing Society was formed by a few keen golfing OWs from the South Wales area in 1938, and JC ‘Bogey’ Hogarth (SH 1918-1923) was elected Secretary. The first meeting was held on 7th May 1939 at Southerndown Golf Club in South Wales. The captain was CJ Trump (H 1891-1894) the CJ Trump Trophy was won by RS Gardner (H 1928-1933) and the runner up was HE Davies (H 1923-1928). A look at the records for that first year of the Society tell us that 15 OWs, all from the South Wales area, each paid a subscription of five shillings.
The outbreak of the Second World War meant an understandable break in the progress of the Society and the next meeting was not held until 24th September 1950, again at Southerndown Golf Club. Annual meetings were held at Southerndown until 1965 after which the Society commenced holding Spring and Autumn meetings most years, usually at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, the St Pierre Golf and Country Club or Newport Club. About this time members joined the Society from outside the South Wales area and masters and guest were encouraged and welcomed to play.
At the Spring meeting held at Newport Golf Club in May 1978 there were 18 OWs, 3 masters and 16 guests. In 1965 South Wales, or South Wales Branch, was dropped from Society’s name and from then on it has been called the OW Golfing Society. Another landmark occurred in 1995 when the Society held its first meeting outside the South Wales area. Stinchcombe Golf Club was the venue and the meal afterwards and the AGM were held at Wycliffe. Stinchcombe became a regular venue for some years, as did the Monmouthshire Golf Club in Abergavenny, and in recent years the Society has visited a variety of courses in Monmouthshire.
Bogey Hogarth remained as Secretary of the Society until the Autumn meeting in 1990. RS (Dick) Gardner then took up the reins and held them and the Society together until May 2006, when - at the age of 90 - he handed over to Peter Beynon (J S 1951-1959).
We would like to encourage golfing OWs to come along to future Spring and/or Autumn meetings, have an enjoyable round of golf with supper afterwards, and, perhaps most importantly, meet up with other OWs, some of whom may well have been their contemporaries at school. Numbers attending have slipped a bit in recent years, but there is no reason why they should not get back to 20 to 30. Distance from the venue isn’t a reason not to attend. There are currently regulars from as far afield as Cleveland in the North of England, Sheffield in Yorkshire, Solihull in the Midlands, Lingfield in Surrey and several from just over the Welsh border - and whilst the original five shilling sub did go up to as much as three pounds at one time, nowadays there is just a charge for the day.
