The “wide-ranging activities programme” was similarly judged to be “a great strength of the college as it provides personal development opportunities for all pupils at all levels” who are “very enthusiastic in all their activities outside the classroom”. Thus, whilst our inspectors noted that “many pupils achieve national distinction in the wider curriculum, most notably in sport and also in some of the expressive and performing arts”, they also found that “achievement and quality in the activities provided are excellent for all aptitudes and abilities”.
The excellence of these findings is entirely due to the dedication of Wycliffe’s talented team of staff. More specifically, the inspectors found that Wycliffe “draws the best from every pupil by the example and commitment of teaching and non-teaching staff”. They noted that “the quality of the teaching and non-teaching staff is very good … providing a supportive, sympathetic and stimulating environment for the pupils in their care”, adding that “staff give willingly of their time and this provides a very positive role model for the pupils”.
Wycliffe’s teachers were described as “well qualified, loyal and committed”, having “a very secure knowledge of their subjects”, whilst “their effective deployment allows house, team and individual strengths to flourish”. Indeed, the inspectors observed, “one of the strengths of the college is the high level of staffing which allows pupils to be taught in small groups”. Moreover, they also observed, “teaching is not confined to periods, and teachers’ commitment is exemplified by the amount of informal support outside class”. Similarly, boarding staff were seen as “energetic and patient in their friendly but firm supervision” of pupils, who “receive excellent pastoral support, guidance and welfare and enjoy their life in the school and relate easily with each other and with all the staff”.
