Academic Overview

At Wycliffe Preparatory School, we care about the development of individual strengths and talents and are active in finding out where these lie in our pupils. At the heart of academic success is a child’s happiness and this is key to encouraging our pupils to succeed. If they are happy, we can help them to achieve their potential.

We offer a broad curriculum throughout the school. Music is taught from Reception upwards by subject specialists and pupils have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument from Year 1. Drama and French are taught by subject specialists from Year 1 upwards and when pupils enter Year 3, they have dedicated weekly ICT lessons to ensure they develop the necessary ICT skills to carry them successfully through higher education and beyond. Most pupils aged 7 and older do sport daily, whether that is swimming, PE or in games lessons where pupils learn to play rugby, hockey, netball, football, rounders, tennis or cricket, depending on the time of year. All pupils have the opportunity to be involved in a drama production every year and we run several musical groups and choirs which appeal to any and all pupils who enjoy making music.

We follow the National Curriculum closely but are not bound by it. At the end of Year 8 our pupils take Common Entrance as their transfer examination either to our own Senior School or to other Public Schools. We incorporate the enrichment which Common Entrance offers alongside the National Curriculum to enhance our provision and ensure our pupils are stimulated and challenged academically.

There are pupils who find school life challenging and we strive to support them through our excellent SEN provision. We have CReSTeD accreditation which recognises and praises the way we develop the skills of our pupils with specific learning difficulties and support them within the classroom and the larger school environment, and are currently working towards NACE accreditation as recognition of the additional challenge and stimulus we offer to our more able pupils in the classroom or with music, drama, art and sport.

To enhance the all-round curriculum we offer, there is a range of activities and extra-curricular clubs to appeal to all pupils. Some of them are sporting in nature (cross country, boys’ hockey, volleyball, swimming to name a few) and others are more creative (art, craft, patchwork, gardening, cooking). The range is wide but the goal is to broaden the minds and experiences of our pupils and to encourage them to work collaboratively with older and younger pupils.

For entry to Year 7 annually, we offer scholarships for academic excellence and awards for a high level of potential in sport, music, art and drama. Scholarships are also available to the Senior School and these are taken in the Autumn and Spring term in Year 8.

We strive constantly to provide individualised learning so that we meet the specific needs of all children in our care.
