Learning another language and finding out about different cultures is essential in our world of international business and travel. We believe that the earlier a pupil is exposed to a foreign language, the better.
Pre-Prep
Children are introduced to French through songs and games. They have fun learning traditional French rhymes and enjoy counting games and other language activities.
Years 3 and 4
We are starting a brand new interactive course in September with lots of games and songs to help children on their way, and they will have the opportunity to practise French on the computer and interactive whiteboard.
Years 5 and 6
Pupils use the Métro course to help consolidate and extend the French they have already learned and put together longer sentences. There are still plenty of games and ICT continues to play an important part in language learning. Pupils also have the chance to practise role-play situations and start writing their own.
Years 7 and 8
Pupils begin to prepare for the Common Entrance exam in French. Although learning is more formal there is still a great emphasis on fun. Pupils use their knowledge creatively, producing PowerPoint presentations, writing poetry and acting out sketches. In Year 8, pupils have the opportunity to expand their MFL studies with either Spanish or German.
Saturday mornings
Throughout the year there are cultural mornings organised for pupils from years 5 to 8. These range from learning about La Fête des Rois in Year 5 to taster sessions in Italian and Russian in Years 7 and 8.
European Day of Languages
We celebrate 26th September each year with a multilingual quiz for the pupils. The theme changes annually and there are prizes for the best entries submitted in each year group.
European Theatre Company
Pupils in Years 3 to 6 love the annual visit from this theatre company! Their French show is always met with rapturous applause. Pupils are helped with the relevant vocabulary in advance so that they can understand the story and some even get the chance to go on stage with the actors! |
