Sport

The PE provision at Wycliffe Preparatory is complemented and supplemented by the Games programme. We encourage pupils to take an interest in their own physical well-being and development. Our aim at Wycliffe is to enable pupils to fulfill their physical potential so we teach pupils to plan, perform and evaluate within a broad and balanced PE and Games programme.

We foster the interaction of pupils in groups and in team situations, encouraging cooperation, competition and tolerance while promoting self respect and respect for others. At Wycliffe, we believe that physical activity can be worthwhile as well as enjoyable and that appreciation will enable pupils to continue with sport long after they have left school.

Sport can contribute in many ways to the development of desirable standards of behaviour and social skills through the promotion of interaction, cooperation, tolerance, respect of the individual and property, and self-respect. Most pupils aged 7 and older participate in sport daily, whether that is swimming, PE or in games lessons where pupils learn to play rugby, hockey, netball, football, rounders, tennis or cricket, depending on the time of year.

We aim to ensure that enjoyment is an important element in sporting activities through variety, progression and interest in the work covered. To this end, we strive to provide interesting competition at an appropriate level for each pupil. To achieve maximum participation of as high a quality as possible from all pupils, we provide a range of activities at varying levels, both curricular and extra-curricular.

Our facilities are varied and valuable. We have a small gymnasium, extensive playing fields for the outdoor sports and athletics, as well as an Astroturf pitch and our own swimming pool. We have access to the sports centre at the Senior School and encourage the children to use these facilities for badminton, squash, basketball and cricket.

Activity is to be enjoyed and learning should be fun. Although results published on the web site are important, we believe that the participation of as many pupils as possible in an activity, with pupils performing to the best of their ability, is more important than the final result.
