Wycliffe College

Each term a new topic is covered through art, play, music, discussion, exploration and child led activities. Topics start with ‘All About Me’ as the children get to know each other. Moving onto more seasonal based topics such as Exploring Autumn, Winter Weather and Signs of Spring. All of these being taught in the Nursery’s fantastic outdoor areas. The Nursery children also celebrate and learn about various festivals throughout the year as they fall.

In the Summer Term, and for a large part of the year in Upper Nursery the topic is based on the children’s interests at the time. This could be anything from their favourite stories to mini beasts, princess and pirates or even superheros.

In the Lower Nursery we lay the foundation stones to learning. Intermixing free play with planned activities. Each child is encouraged to explore and question at their own individual level. We also promote social skills, learning how to share and other valuable life skills as preparation to the next stage of education.

In the Upper Nursery, children are introduced to number concepts, shapes, sequencing, phonics and pre-reading and writing skills.

Dance and French language classes are led by specialist teachers.

The Upper Nursery has strong links with the Reception class. The Reception teacher visits Nursery weekly and works closely with the Upper Nursery teachers to ensure that each child experiences a curriculum that stimulates, supports and challenges their learning and development.

All our nursery children who stay for school lunch choose from a selection of nutritious cooked meals. Sharing mealtimes with their friends and teachers helps to build essential social skills for the future. Wycliffe provides the perfect atmosphere for pre-school children to flourish and grow.

In the latest ISI, Early Years Foundation Stage Inspection, Wycliffe Nursery was described as ‘outstanding’ in all areas.

‘Provision for the children’s well-being is outstanding.’ and ‘Children play well together and are happy. Staff work well with parents to ensure that excellent induction procedures into Nursery enable children to feel safe and cared for.’ – Independent Schools Inspectorate, March 2013
