The Inter Regional Regatta is the first national level regatta of the season and takes place at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. The event involves 6 lane side by side racing over 1500m eagerly watched by over 5000 spectators. Crews go through multiple rounds to make respective A and B finals.
Athletes attend regional trials over the course of a number of days to be selected to represent their region (the South West or WAGS for us) who then compete against the other top crews from the 11 regions across the country.
After having undergone these trials, Saffron Weaver was selected as the fastest under 16 single female sculler in the South West. During the event which was Saffron’s first regatta in the single and her first national level event nerves were very high.
Once on the water with reassurance from the coach nerves dissipated and racing began. A hard fought semi final Followed, placing Saffron in second overall and moving her into the A final with a chance to win Wycliffe’s first national rowing medal since 2009. In an incredibly tight final Saffron came third securing herself as one of the fastest single scullers in the country and Wycliffe’s most successful rower in recent years.
Our newly formed junior club performed outstandingly achieved 3 national silver medals, ranking Wycliffe as the number 1 rowing club at the event and placing the South West in second place on the over all event leader board.
