Athletics is a big focus in the Summer Term, with this being taught to all pupils in Physical Education lessons. It is through these lessons that the pupils learn the different techniques for jumping over a high jump bar and into a pit; throwing balls and the vortex, as well as javelin, discus and shot. To help with their running, the pupils are taught about sprinting technique and sprint starts, as well as pacing and race tactics for longer races.

For the more able pupils, Wycliffe enters a number of Athletics meetings, starting with the local Severnside Athletics meet in May, where we send over 50 competitors to take on their counterparts from local schools. From this, a squad of the more elite performers are selected to go to the Regional Prep School Competition at Abingdon School’s Tilsley Park. It is at the Regional Athletics that the pupils qualify for the National Prep School Athletics Finals, with Wycliffe having sent 9 athletes in the past two years, including an U13 800m Silver medal, and an U14 800m Bronze medal.

Every Summer Term, Wycliffe holds its annual Sports Day, a fantastic event which sees the four houses of Grenfell, Lincoln, Scott and Shaftesbury, compete in track and field events, culminating in the mass house relay at the end of the day, where every child in the house runs half a lap of the track before handing on the baton. It really is an event that displays the inclusivity and comradery that Wycliffe is proud of.

Please follow us on social media using @sportwycliffe on both Twitter and Instagram to keep up-to-date for all recent news and photographs of the pupils’ achievements.
