Cross Country is a sport that is continually growing in popularity at Wycliffe, with ever increasing opportunities to train, and a growing fixture list. Cross Country training takes place several times each week. It is run by a specialist coach, who aims to cater for and develop both the elite runner, and the keen participant.
In addition to developing our budding runners in training sessions, we enter teams into the Dursley League Cross Country series, which runs throughout the Autumn Term on a Saturday morning for pupils in Years 3 – 6, regardless of ability. We have tasted great success over the years in this competition and it has become something of a proving ground for future Cross Country stars.
We enter our elite runners into both District and County events, and a number of athletes qualify to represent the county and beyond each year. Over the last few years, our girls team has finished runners-up in the National Prep School Championships twice, as well as being crowned champions in 2016. They also managed to finish in a fantastic 5th position in the English Schools Cross Country Cup competition.
We run two inter-house Cross Country races throughout the School year, with every pupil in the school participating. They are hugely popular with the pupils, especially with the introduction of the new relay format. The Cross Country relay runs in the Autumn Term; pupils race around the course, handing the baton to their team mate to complete the next lap. In the Spring Term there is the opportunity for individual pupils to shine with a straight race.
