Tributes have been paid to a former councillor, businessman and charity fundraiser.

Patrick Morgan was a Conservative councillor and served two terms on Swansea City Council in the 1980s for Ffynone ward. Following boundary changes he went on to represent Sketty ward for 13 years.

His family ran the Hughes-Morgan timber business which built pallets for munitions during the Second World War, where he worked briefly before heading to London to work for a merchant bank.

He served his National Service as a bandsman in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and on demob joined the 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Wales, Swansea’s own Territorial battalion, where he rose to the rank of major, commanding A Company in Llanelli, before joining the TA Pool of information.

On his return to Swansea, he worked as a salesman, an insurance broker and financial advisor.

Conservative councillor for Gower Richard Lewis said: “I knew Patrick for many years and he was an excellent councillor.

“He was a very entertaining speaker, and you would not want to follow him if you were speaking in the Guildhall.

“The Guildhall is not often a place of hilarity, but he would have even Labour members in laughter.

“I have a lot of happy memories of Patrick, and a lot of entertaining stories, and I’m very sorry to hear of his passing.”

Fellow Conservative council Lyndon Jones, who represents Bishopston ward, said: “Patrick worked very hard for the Welsh Conservatives and was chairman for Swansea East Conservative Association at the time of his death.

“Even when he stopped being a councillor he carried on that hard work as a volunteer. He was a very good foot soldier for the Conservatives”.

He was also involved with establishing Swansea Sound in the mid-1970s and was a presenter on the late-night show in its early days. A keen jazz enthusiast and member of Swansea Jazz Club, he played piano and clarinet.

Dave Cottle, of Swansea Jazz Club, said: “Patrick was a regular visitor to the club when he lived in the area, and would pop in most weeks.

“He generously donated a two week stay at his Spanish apartment as a raffle prize.

“He enjoyed his music – although I once remember him complaining the packets of crisps behind the bar weren’t big enough.

“But he was a nice guy.”

Mr Morgan helped raise charity funds through Swansea Rotary Club and other organisations he supported all his life, and volunteered for Prostate Cancer UK, speaking about his own experience with the disease, and with the Tenovus Choir.

In later life he established a business to develop meals for diabetics called Eat Well Be Well.

He had two children, Guy and Gareth, from his first marriage to Patricia and had three grandchildren Ruby, Hattie and Max.

He is survived by partner Linda with whom he shared the latter years of his life.
