Hockey is the major sport at Wycliffe for girls in the Autumn Term. The children are first introduced to Hockey in Year 3 (although we start to play in Year 2 with teams of boys and girls) learning, the fundamental skills of the game, and continuing to expand and refine their techniques through to Year 8. We believe that equal emphasis on the development of skills and tactical play is important in order to create the whole player.
We have a number of Hockey specialists who work with the Prep School children to enhance the Hockey programme. They provide top quality coaching and catering for all in order to enable each child to be the best they can be. Additionally, we have an extremely motivated and enthusiastic group of staff who support and encourage all individuals with the development of their skills.
Wycliffe doesn’t just focus on the elite players; every child has the opportunity to represent the school, as we field as many teams as numbers in the year group enables.
The school is lucky enough to have two astros. We have one smaller pitch which is suitable for both VII and IX a-side matches and a larger XI a-side pitch which has recently been refurbished and was open by Olympic Gold Medallist Hollie Webb in September 2016.
Since 2013, Wycliffe has seen teams reaching the IAPS National Hockey Finals, with the U12 team finishing in 2nd place in the finals in 2014. 2015 saw both the U13A and U11A teams unbeaten all season. There are also annual tournaments within our fixture blocks which provide the children with another focus for the term.
Wycliffe also has pupils training at Junior Development Centres, Junior Academy Centres and the Junior Regional Performance Centre.
