Meet the House Parent – Mr Sam Hirons

I started Business Marketing Management at the University of Gloucestershire, then completed my PGC at University College London. Since joining Wycliffe, I have loved playing badminton with the old OWs and every now and then I build Lego cars – but the proper ones!

How long have you been at Wycliffe?
I have been at Wycliffe for four years; the first two I completed my NPQLT whilst being a tutor in Ward’s House, then I became a Resident Assistant at Haywardsfield and my fourth year as House Master of Ward’s.

What do you teach?
I teach Business and Economics.

What are you looking to implement in-House this year?
I’m looking forward to enhancing the community feel at Ward’s through fun and engaging Saturday activities and having an open-door policy so that the boys know that they can always come to me or the amazing tutors for any problems, big or small!

What are you most looking forward to this/next academic year?
I’m looking forward to getting to know all the boys at Ward’s and taking the 13s to the ‘finish line’, as they were my first tutor group here. However, if I’m being honest, I’m excited for House Song and for Ward’s reclaiming the trophy as well as winning Sports Day for two years on the bounce.

About Ward’s

From Year 9 all the way up to Year 13, the House can accommodate 35 boarders, as well as 14 Day pupils or Flexi-Boarders. All rooms are en-suite.

Ward’s House is named after RV Ward, a Master at Wycliffe College for 50 years. Originally a Georgian farmhouse, the building was purchased by the School and turned into a Boarding House in 1949, five years after RV Ward’s death. It was further redeveloped in the 1960s and then demolished entirely in 2016. During the 2016/17 academic year, the boys of Ward’s House were accommodated in other places around the School, including Loosley Halls and Robinson House. During this time, the House was rebuilt, using some of the bricks from the original building, and reopened in September 2017.
