Pupils in the Nursery School, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoy regular, timetabled time in our Forest School. Children who learn to play outdoors are more likely to have an appreciation of the environment, naturally develop social skills and by making their own discoveries gain greater independence.

What is Nursery Forest School?

Our Forest School is based on our grounds close to the Pre-Prep building. The children go to the same natural space on a regular basis to play and learn. The children have the opportunity to engage in achievable tasks, use their creativity and initiative, play in a group or by themselves and learn about the natural world. They develop their resilience, confidence and their knowledge in various areas and have the chance to take supported risks. We will offer creative activities with natural materials, games, nature studies, rope work, fire lighting and the use of hand tools; some of these are part of the ‘Wild Passport’ outdoor skills curriculum.

What does my Child Need to Wear for Forest School?

With the exception of very extreme weather, we will aim to take the children out come rain or shine – therefore, it is very important that your child is warm and dry. Below is a list of clothes that we would recommend, and we kindly ask you to supply these for your child on the day of Forest School.

  • Stout shoes/boots/snow boots/wellies (unlined wellies can be very cold, so please make sure your child has extra socks)
  • Long trousers (e.g. warm tracksuit bottoms)
  • Waterproof trousers/dungarees/salopettes (even when it is not raining these will keep your child warm and dry when they play on the ground)
  • Long-sleeve t-shirt
  • Fleece/sweatshirt
  • Warm, waterproof jacket
  • Extra pair of socks
  • Warm/woolly hat
  • Gloves
  • Warm underwear (vest and Long Johns/tights/leggings)
