Wycliffe has a proud tradition of playing rugby, with the season running through the Autumn Term. Every boy from U8 to U13 has the opportunity to represent the school in fixtures against other teams.
The focus during the season is firmly placed on the individual child and their development as a rugby player, rather than a ‘winning at all costs’ mentality. Throughout the age groups, a big emphasis is placed on the core skills, giving every boy the opportunity to be able to run, side-step, pass, tackle, score a try and, importantly, have fun during training and matches. Pupils receive coaching during their games sessions, with fixtures taking place in a Wednesday afternoon.
When the Sevens season starts in the Spring Term the U13s begin training in preparation for the Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s tournament. Wycliffe tasted their biggest success in 2016, winning the group stage of the tournament. To help prepare for this we enter a number of smaller tournaments in addition to running our own tournament.
Wycliffe can boast current Gloucester Rugby player, Charlie Sharples as an ex-pupil, and the School also has close links with the Premiership Club. The Senior School is used as the Stroud Centre for the Gloucester Rugby Club Developing Player Programme which runs from U13s – U15s.
